A young carpenter is in his shop working away listening to the news on the radio. He feels the need to make a difference at the height of WW2. He is downtrodden by his friends for they say things like: what can a weak carpenter do? For he isn't very built. But he is determined to make a difference in some way, so he enlists. At one point he enters a very war damaged town in Europe. Being tired he sits down with his back to a wall to rest. He looks off into the distance, gunfire and explosions in the background... He knows the fighting will reach here soon, probably within a few hours. He looks next to him and realizes he has sat next to a boy who is missing half of his lower leg. It has healed for the most part but sits wrapped in bandages. The carpenter knows that this child is most likely homeless and will die without a working leg. Thats when it hits him. He pulls out his bayonet and grabs a large chunk of scrap wood and begins to carve as quickly as he can. Using his knowledge of wood carving he carves the boy a makeshift leg. The boy notices him hard at work and is excited beyond belief as he sees it take shape. The carpenter straps it to the boys leg and for the first time in forever he is able to walk about. The boy gives him a hug but it is broken apart by gunfire. He tells the boy to run and because he has a foot again the boy is able to escape. He runs off the best he can looking behind him as the carpenter charges forward into battle.
Many years pass and we are back in the shop. An old man is working away on a carving. Just then the door opens and a strapling man walks in with a metal leg. The old man walks to the counter to see what he needs just as the man places a wooden leg on the counter. The old man looks at the leg, then at the man, then back at the leg again. He remembers carving the leg, and all the years he spend wondering about the boy, and with an excited look on his face looks back at the man. The man is smiling with tears in his eyes. They embrace once more after so many years and the carpenter, with tears in his eyes, realizes that he was able to make a difference after all.

We liked this story. It had great character developments! We care about your characters!
ReplyDeleteThe challenge about this story would be the transitions between the 2 time settings. We talked about maybe the approach The Incredibles took with all the newspapers indicating the passing of time would be better than the classic "--years later" captions.
It would be fun to think of other creative ideas to solve this time lapse challenge.
Thats a great idea! a time laps with newspapers would fit perfectly!
Deleteor have you ever seen the 2002 movie "Time Machine" There are some pretty awesome time lapses there. a pretty cool one my brother and I happened to discuss like two days ago was a part in the film where the main character travels forward in time, and the room he and his time machine is in turns into a dress shop and you see the style of dresses change and the length of the skirt get shorter and shorter and then it turns into a Car factory and you see cars being built and their style changing over years and years. you should totally check it out
